The most significant academic work is done in the area of reading. Reading is an essential part of kindergarten, and should be taken seriously by both students and parents. All letters are taught by the end of the second month of school. The development of fine motor skills is also an important part of kindergarten. It is important that children learn to function well in the classroom environment. Kindergartners participate in a wide variety of activities designed to help them make the adjustment to school and working in a group. This includes getting along with other children and cooperating with adults other than their parents. Kindergartners learn to take turns and wait without interrupting. They also work to develop their listening skills.

Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten
One way you can prepare your children for kindergarten is by showing enthusiasm about school. For many children the thought of going to a new place full of new people is a scary concept. If you show a genuine excitement about school, your child will pick up on it. Discuss things your children will learn and the friends they will make. Acclimate your children to school by visiting the building before they start.

Helping Your Child Succeed In Kindergarten
As a parent, you will play a significant role in the success of your children. Parents’ involvement in education is one of the greatest determinants of success. It is critical that all learning at school be reinforced at home. This is especially true in reading. Parents who regularly read with their child greatly increase their child’s chance of becoming a successful reader. It is suggested that children read to their parents at least fifteen minutes per day, however, all time spent reading is productive.

Kindergarten Curriculum
Eagle Crest has developed an outstanding kindergarten curriculum. We have sought out the best materials available, and our curriculum meets or exceeds all state curriculum requirements. We use a back-to-basics approach. This includes the teaching of phonics, beginning in kindergarten. Phonics continues to be taught throughout the first part of second grade. Children who are instructed in phonics tend to be much more successful readers. Science, history and geography are taught, but students are not expected to demonstrate mastery of the material through tests. Rather, it is through the study of history, geography and science that students will become more aware of the people, places and events that have shaped our country and the world.

Enhancing Material to Meet Individual Needs
Eagle Crest is committed to challenging each child to reach his or her greatest potential. Teachers work to maximize learning opportunities for each student. Your children’s teacher will work closely with you to determine any special needs your children may have in order for them to become successful in the classroom.
